Threads Topic Tags and Hashtags: How They Work in 2026
2026-10-19
Threads hashtags are called topic tags, and you can add only one per post. Tap the # button in the composer, or type # followed by a word, and pick or create a topic. After you post, the tag shows up as blue text. Any extra "#words" you type stay plain text: they don't turn blue, aren't clickable, and don't put your post into another topic.
So the Instagram habit of stacking ten hashtags at the end of a caption does nothing on Threads. Below: how to add a tag, why one won't turn blue, whether tags help reach, and how to choose one.
What are topic tags on Threads?
Topic tags group your post under a subject so people interested in it can find you. Threads rolled them out globally in December 2023.
From Meta's Help Center and official Threads posts:
- One topic per post
- Up to 50 characters, and spaces and special characters are allowed (for example, "home espresso")
- The # is optional. You can tag a topic without it, or start the topic with # if you prefer
- The tag appears in blue, and tapping it opens search results for posts on that topic
When tags launched, Adam Mosseri described the design as no # marks, multi-word support, only one tag per post, and the tag view being the search view. He said the goal was to focus tags on communities rather than engagement hacking.
How do you add a topic tag on Threads?
In the app
- Start a new thread
- Write your post
- Tap the # button above the keyboard, or type # in your text
- Type a topic, or pick one of the suggestions (trending or existing topics)
- Post
On desktop (threads.com)
- Click + to create a post
- Write your text, then click Tag or type #
- Enter a topic or choose a suggestion, then click Post
Since March 2025, the composer also suggests a trending topic or one related to your past posts when it's relevant. If you're stuck, start there.
Why is my Threads hashtag not turning blue?
Check these in order:
- You already have a tag. Only one per post. Everything after the first is plain text.
- It wasn't set as a tag. If you typed # and kept typing without confirming a topic, or pasted text from somewhere else, it may not have become a tag. Delete it and add it again with the # button.
- It's over 50 characters. Shorten it.
- Your app is out of date. Update and try again.
To check a published post, tap the tag. If it opens topic search results, it worked.
How many hashtags can you use on Threads?
One clickable topic tag per post. You can type as many # symbols as you like, but only one becomes a topic. Threads' official explanation: picking the one topic that best represents your post makes it easier for people who care about that topic to find and read it.
Separately, Meta announced in March 2025 that it was testing up to 10 topics on your profile so visitors can see your interests at a glance. Look for it under Edit profile; the label may vary by version.
Do topic tags help reach on Threads?
Yes, somewhat, but more tags won't help.
- In March 2025, Meta said that according to its internal data, posts with tagged topics generally receive more views than posts without one. It didn't share numbers.
- A tagged post can appear when someone searches for or taps that topic.
- Tags aren't the main driver. Mosseri has repeatedly stressed replies and conversation; a post that gets people talking will do more than any tag. Meta hasn't published how much each signal weighs.
The "hashtags don't work on Threads" complaint usually comes from people using the Instagram approach: ten tags, of which only one ever counted.
How do you pick the right topic tag?
- Pick the one phrase that best describes the post. "Life" is too broad; "first-time manager" or "sourdough baking" reaches the right people.
- Use words people actually search. Search the topic first and see if there are recent posts under it.
- Reuse 2-3 core topics. Consistency helps readers, and the feed, understand what you post about.
- Don't hijack unrelated trending tags. People who tap expecting something else won't engage.
- Try the composer's suggestions. They're based on trending topics and your past posts.
Your tag sits inside the post text, so keep an eye on the 500-character limit with the Threads character counter. To see whether tagged posts really do better for you, compare them with the Threads engagement rate calculator.

FAQ
Do I need to type # for a Threads tag?
No. The Help Center says you can tag a topic without #, or include # as the first character if you prefer.
Can a topic tag include spaces?
Yes. Spaces and special characters are allowed, up to 50 characters.
Can I add a topic tag to a reply?
Meta's instructions cover tagging a topic in a post. Behavior in replies isn't clearly documented, so test it.
Why do some posts look like they have several hashtags?
Usually only one of them is a real, blue topic tag. The rest are plain text.
Can I change a tag after posting?
We couldn't find official guidance on swapping a tag when you edit a post. Double-check before posting; if you must change it, delete and repost.
