How to Add Line Breaks on Threads (Posts and Bio)
2026-10-19
To add a line break on Threads, press Return (Enter) in the composer. Single line breaks generally stay as you typed them. The tricky part is blank lines: leave two or three empty lines and Threads may collapse them into one, or remove them. The fix is to put a character on each "empty" line, such as an invisible blank character or a small symbol, so the line isn't really empty.
Try our free Threads line break generator: paste your text and copy a version that keeps every blank line.
One caveat up front: Meta hasn't documented how Threads handles blank lines. What follows is based on user reports and formatting-tool testing, so test once before an important post.
How do you add a line break on Threads?
In the app
- Type your post in the composer
- Tap Return on the keyboard where you want the new line
On desktop (threads.com)
Press Enter in the composer to start a new line. If that doesn't work, try Shift + Enter.
Why are my line breaks or blank lines disappearing on Threads?
The three usual causes:
- Consecutive blank lines collapse. Two or more empty lines in a row often end up as one.
- Pasting breaks the spacing. Text written in a notes app or doc and pasted in can lose blank lines.
- Trailing spaces. A space at the end of a line can make breaks behave unexpectedly.
Instagram is well known for collapsing blank lines too. Threads is also a Meta app and appears to behave similarly, but Meta hasn't confirmed how it works.
How do you add blank lines (spacing) on Threads?
The trick is to make the blank line not blank.
Option 1: Use an invisible character
Paste an invisible character on each empty line, then press Return. Common choices:
- Braille blank (U+2800): looks empty, but platforms treat it as content
- Zero-width space (U+200B): what many "line break generator" tools insert
- Hangul filler (U+3164): popular for Instagram bios
Most free line-break generators work the same way: paste your text, convert it, copy the result into Threads.
Option 2: Use a subtle symbol
Put a "·", "." or "|" on the empty line. It's slightly visible, but it's the most reliable option, and it can double as a section divider.
Things to watch
- Invisible characters still count toward the 500-character limit. Check with the Threads character counter.
- Screen readers may announce them, and they make future edits fiddly. Use them sparingly.
- Results can vary by device and app version. Check the published post.
How do you add line breaks to your Threads bio?
- Go to your profile and tap Edit profile
- Tap Bio
- Press Return where you want a new line (on desktop, Enter or Shift + Enter)
- Save
If your bio line breaks won't stick
- Blank lines disappear: same fix as posts. Put an invisible character or a symbol on the empty line.
- Pasted text loses formatting: retype the bio directly in the app.
- Character limit: the Threads bio limit is widely reported as 150 characters, and it's safest to assume line breaks count too. We couldn't find this number in Meta's Help Center, so go by what the app shows.
Bio formatting tips
- Line 1: what you post about. "Product designer, sharing freelance life" tells people in one glance.
- Split into 2-3 lines: topic, credibility, posting rhythm.
- Keep links out of the bio text. Threads has a separate links field with room for up to 5 links (Meta, May 2025), which saves your 150 characters.
- Add profile topics. Meta announced in March 2025 that it was testing up to 10 topics on your profile to show your interests.
- Go easy on fancy fonts. The Threads font generator can make bold or script-style text, but those Unicode characters are harder to search and screen readers may read them oddly. Keep your name and key terms in normal text.
- Use symbols as separators. "|" or "·" holds up better than blank lines.
How do you format a long Threads post so people read it?
- Break every 1-3 lines. Most people read on phones; dense blocks get scrolled past.
- Save blank lines for section breaks. Spacing every line makes posts harder to read, not easier.
- Use a text attachment for long content. Since September 2025, you can attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post. Keep the point in the 500-character post and put details in the attachment.
- Fake bullet points with symbols. Threads has no list formatting, so use "·", "-" or numbers.
FAQ
Can you add more than one blank line on Threads?
Empty lines on their own often collapse into one. Putting an invisible character or symbol on each empty line usually keeps multiple blank lines.
Do line breaks count toward the Threads character limit?
Third-party character guides count each line break as one character. Assume they do if you're near 500.
Do scheduled posts keep line breaks?
We found no official report of the built-in scheduler breaking line breaks. Third-party tools may process text differently, so check their preview.
Will my formatting look the same for everyone?
Mostly, but line length changes with screen size and text-size settings. Breaking lines at natural pauses holds up best on every device.
Is there a way to bold or italicize text on Threads?
Not in regular posts. Text attachments support bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. In posts and bios, people use Unicode "font" characters instead.
